An invisible fence for dogs is designed to help contain a dog within a boundary without a physical fence, using a collar that warns with a tone and, on most systems, a static correction. The best one depends on your yard: a wireless circle fence for small, open yards; an in-ground wire for a custom shape; or a GPS collar fence for large or rural properties. We compared five invisible dog fences from PetSafe, Halo and SpotOn, and we cover the welfare questions to weigh first.

How we evaluated these invisible fences

We didn’t install five fences in our own yards for this article. We read each Amazon listing and maker support pages, checked stock, seller and rating counts on Amazon (US, ZIP 10001) in October 2026, compared coverage, collar fit, correction options and subscription needs, and consulted the independent reviews we could find, though exact-model coverage varied.

We left out a near-duplicate PetSafe wireless model, two GPS fences we couldn’t find credible independent testing for, a lower-rated GPS fence, and a GPS fence whose product card showed no name or image.

Should you use an invisible fence?

Short answer: think carefully first. Most invisible fences use static correction, which veterinary behaviorists advise against, and they don’t stop people or other animals from coming in. A physical fence, supervised time outside or a long line are the alternatives.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based training and advises against aversive methods, including shock collars, citing risks such as fear, stress and aggression. Tufts University’s veterinary school advises not to install an invisible fence for a dog that bites strangers, because unwelcome visitors don’t see a barrier.

A determined or frightened dog can also run through the boundary. If you still choose an invisible fence, pick one with a tone-only or vibration mode, follow the maker’s training plan, and never leave a dog outside unsupervised for long periods.

Wireless, in-ground or GPS: which type do you need?

Short answer: wireless circle fences are quick to set up but only make a circle around the house; in-ground fences follow your yard’s shape but you have to install a boundary wire; GPS fences such as the SpotOn need no base station or wire and suit big properties, but they cost the most and depend on satellite signal.

  • Wireless circle: a transmitter indoors creates a round boundary. PetSafe’s support pages note the boundary can fluctuate and that metal, slopes and obstructions can affect it.
  • In-ground: you lay or bury a boundary wire around any shape you like, as the manual describes. It takes a weekend to install, and breaks in the wire need finding and fixing.
  • GPS: you draw the fence in an app. SpotOn notes that buildings and heavy tree cover can affect accuracy, and it lists a half-acre minimum.

Pro Tip: follow the maker’s training instructions before relying on the boundary, keep your dog on a leash while it learns, and look for reward-based training guidance. Halo and SpotOn include training programs.

1. PetSafe Stay & Play Compact Wireless Fence: best wireless dog fence

Bottom line: a no-dig wireless fence with a circular boundary you can set from 22 to 105 feet in every direction, up to 3/4 acre, and a rechargeable, waterproof collar for dogs 5 lb and up with 6–28 inch necks, per the listing. It’s the quick-setup pick for open yards.

  • 3/4 Acre Of Circular Coverage: Adjust the circular boundary range up to 3/4-acre (22-105 ft in all directions) from the …
  • Most Accurate Wireless Fence: Our proprietary circular boundary gently guides your dog back to the play area

An LCD on the indoor transmitter shows the boundary size and warns of errors, and the listing says your dog can come back in without a correction if it crosses the boundary. It’s portable for trips with an outlet. It had about 6,800 ratings at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: the boundary is always a circle around the transmitter, so it won’t fit long or irregular yards, and PetSafe notes the edge can fluctuate.

Who this is NOT for: narrow or oddly shaped yards, or homes with lots of metal siding near the transmitter.

2. PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence (PIF-300): best with a replaceable-battery collar

Bottom line: PetSafe’s classic wireless fence with a circular range up to 1/2 acre, expandable with a second transmitter, and a waterproof collar for dogs 8 lb and up with 6–28 inch necks, per the listing. Pick it if you prefer a collar battery you swap rather than recharge.

The listing gives collar battery life as up to 2 months, with a low-battery indicator, and it uses PetSafe’s RFA-67D-11 battery. Like the Compact, it allows static-free reentry and is portable. It had about 9,500 ratings at our check, the most in this list, and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: it covers a smaller circle than the Compact, and you have to buy PetSafe’s replacement batteries.

Who this is NOT for: yards over 1/2 acre without a second transmitter, or owners who want a rechargeable collar.

3. PetSafe Stubborn Dog In-Ground Fence: best in-ground fence

Bottom line: a DIY buried-wire fence with 500 feet of wire for about 1/3 acre, expandable up to 25 acres with more wire, and a collar with a tone-plus-vibration mode and 4 static levels, per the listing. Pick it when you need a boundary that follows your yard’s shape.

  • Great for Hearing-Impaired Pets: If you best friend has a hard time hearing, the tone plus vibration mode will help him …

The tone-plus-vibration mode also helps dogs with hearing loss learn the boundary, per the listing. The waterproof collar fits dogs 8 lb and up and 6 months or older, with 6–28 inch necks, and you can add collars for more dogs. It had about 2,200 ratings at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: installing the boundary wire takes a weekend by the listing’s own estimate, and a cut wire stops the fence until you find and repair the break.

Who this is NOT for: renters, or owners who don’t want to dig.

4. Halo Collar 5: best GPS dog fence with tracking

Bottom line: a GPS collar that lets you draw multiple virtual fences in an app, with sound, vibration and optional static warnings and live location tracking, per the listing. A Halo membership is required to activate the GPS and fence features.

Halo says it uses dual-frequency GPS with ground-station corrections, works with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular connections, and sends alerts if your dog nears or crosses a boundary. It includes a training program for the warnings. It had about 750 ratings (3.8 stars) at our check, sold by Halo.

Limitation: it adds an ongoing subscription cost, since the fence won’t work without a paid plan, and it has a lower average rating than the PetSafe picks.

Who this is NOT for: owners who don’t want a monthly or yearly subscription.

5. SpotOn Omni GPS Fence Collar: best GPS fence without a subscription

Bottom line: a GPS fence collar whose fences work out of the box without a subscription, for properties of 1/2 acre or more, with two alert tones and up to 30 optional static levels, per the listing. Pick it for large or rural land when you don’t want a base station or wire.

  • QUICK SETUP – Set up your GPS fence for dogs & manage it from your phone with our app. SpotOn offers the option to walk …

You walk or draw fences in the app, and an Off-Grid mode lets you create fences without cell service, per the listing. The collar is IP67 waterproof and runs about 40+ hours per charge without a subscription. An optional plan adds live tracking and escape alerts. This listing is the medium size for 12–18 inch necks. It had about 490 ratings (3.9 stars) at our check, sold by SpotOn.

Limitation: it’s the most expensive collar here, it needs frequent charging, and buildings and heavy trees can affect GPS accuracy.

Who this is NOT for: yards under 1/2 acre, or tight budgets.

How to choose an invisible fence

How big and what shape is your yard?

For a small, open yard around the house, a PetSafe wireless circle fence is simplest. For a long or irregular yard, the in-ground fence follows your layout. For half an acre or more, especially rural land, consider a GPS collar.

Do you want static correction at all?

The in-ground PetSafe, the Halo and the SpotOn list tone or vibration warnings; check the PetSafe wireless manuals for their warning modes. If you want to avoid static, check that the system lets you use tone or vibration alone, and talk to a trainer about reward-based boundary training.

Can you keep up with charging and fees?

Rechargeable collars need regular charging, GPS collars most of all. The Halo needs a paid plan; the SpotOn’s fences work without one.

Buying tip: US Bing searches for “invisible fence for dogs” ran at about 840–1,650 a month over the past year. If you’re buying before winter, check whether the collar is rechargeable, how cold weather affects its battery in the maker’s manual, and the current price on the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Do invisible fences work?

They can contain some dogs with consistent training, but a determined or frightened dog can run through the boundary, and they don’t keep other animals or people out.

Are invisible fences cruel?

AVSAB advises against aversive training methods, including shock collars, citing risks such as fear, stress and aggression. Many systems offer tone or vibration warnings; check whether you can use those alone.

What’s the difference between a wireless and an in-ground dog fence?

A wireless fence makes a circle around an indoor transmitter with no digging. An in-ground fence uses a buried wire, so it can follow any yard shape but takes longer to install.

Do GPS dog fences need a subscription?

It depends on the brand. Halo requires a membership for its GPS and fence features. SpotOn’s fences work without one, with an optional plan for tracking.

Can I use an invisible fence for an aggressive dog?

Tufts University’s veterinary school advises against an invisible fence for a dog that bites strangers, because visitors can’t see the boundary. Use a physical fence and talk to a veterinary behaviorist.

Our verdict

If you’ve weighed the welfare concerns and still want an invisible fence, the PetSafe Stay & Play Compact is the simplest choice for a small, open yard. For a custom shape, choose the PetSafe Stubborn Dog In-Ground Fence. For large properties, the SpotOn Omni works without a subscription, and the Halo Collar 5 adds live tracking with a paid plan.
