An automatic dog feeder dispenses dry food on a schedule you set, so meals arrive on time when you work late or get stuck in traffic. The best one depends on your dog’s size and kibble: most smart feeders suit small to medium dogs, while large breeds need bigger portions and a wider food outlet. We compared six automatic dog feeders from PETLIBRO, PetSafe, WOPET and Dokoo by portion size, kibble limit, power backup and app features.

How we evaluated these feeders

We didn’t run six feeders side by side in our own homes for this article. We read each Amazon listing and maker guidance, checked stock, seller and rating counts on Amazon (US, ZIP 10001) in October 2026, compared capacity, kibble size limits, meal settings and backup power, and consulted the independent tests we could find from Tom’s Guide and Reviewed, though exact-model coverage varied.

We left out a microchip feeder (it controls who eats rather than when), a gravity feeder with no timer, a camera feeder we couldn’t find independent testing for, and two listings whose product cards showed no name or image.

Is an automatic dog feeder right for your dog?

Short answer: yes for keeping regular mealtimes and measured portions on busy days, but not as a replacement for someone checking on your dog.

The ASPCA recommends feeding adult dogs twice a day, dividing the daily amount into two meals spaced eight to twelve hours apart, and notes that some dogs overeat when food is left out free-choice. A timed feeder makes that schedule easy to keep.

The American Kennel Club warns that food can spoil, feeders can malfunction and health problems can go unnoticed, and advises arranging a pet sitter, family member or boarding if you’ll be away for more than a day, even with a feeder.

Pro Tip: run the feeder for a week while you’re home. Watch every meal drop, check the bowl for jams, and measure what actually comes out against your vet’s daily amount before you rely on it.

Bottom line: a 5L app-controlled feeder with dual-band WiFi (2.4 and 5 GHz), up to 10 meals a day and 1–48 portions of 1/12 cup per meal (up to 4 cups), per the listing. It’s the best all-round choice for small and medium dogs on dry kibble.

You can record a 10-second meal call. PETLIBRO lists dry kibble 2–15 mm in diameter. It had about 10,400 ratings (4.1 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: on emergency battery power, stored meal schedules continue, but WiFi and remote app control are unavailable, per PETLIBRO. Large or oddly shaped kibble can jam.

Who this is NOT for: dogs on kibble over 15 mm, or owners who don’t want an app.

2. PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed: best big-hopper feeder without an app

Bottom line: a 24-cup hopper that serves 1/8 cup to 4 cups per meal, up to 12 meals a day, with a slow-feed option that releases larger meals over 15 minutes, per the listing. Pick it if you want a large hopper and simple on-unit programming rather than an app.

It had about 6,400 ratings (4.2 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: there’s no app; you program it on the unit. It runs on 4 D batteries, and the wall adapter is sold separately.

Who this is NOT for: owners who want phone alerts or remote feeding.

3. PETLIBRO Automatic Feeder with Camera: best with a camera

Bottom line: a 5L feeder with a 1080p camera, night vision and two-way audio, so you can watch the bowl and talk to your dog from the app, plus up to 10 meals a day, per the listing. Pick it if you want to check in on mealtimes from your phone.

It supports 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi and has infrared detection designed to catch jams. Tom’s Guide tested a PETLIBRO Granary camera feeder for a month and liked the live feed and steady scheduling, but noted that its backup power relies on three D batteries sold separately; we couldn’t confirm it was this exact listing, so check the listing for backup details. It had about 12,000 ratings (4.1 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: the listing says it’s for cats and small dogs, and the camera adds cost and an app you have to keep connected.

Who this is NOT for: medium or large dogs, or anyone who doesn’t want a camera in the home.

4. WOPET 6L WiFi Automatic Feeder: best for up to 15 meals a day

Bottom line: a 6L app feeder with up to 15 meals a day and 1–50 portions per meal, for kibble 2–15 mm, plus a low-food sensor and a 10-second voice recorder, per the listing. Pick it if you want to split food into many small meals.

Safety locks on the lid and container help restrict access to stored food, and the app can be shared with family members. It runs on the included adapter with 3 D batteries as backup, though WiFi and app control need the adapter. It had about 5,700 ratings (4.3 stars) at our check, sold by WOPET.

Limitation: it connects only to 2.4 GHz WiFi, and we couldn’t find an independent test of this exact model.

Who this is NOT for: homes with only 5 GHz WiFi, or large dogs with big kibble.

5. PetSafe 5-Meal Automatic Pet Feeder: best simple feeder without WiFi

Bottom line: a rotating tray with five 1-cup compartments for dry or semi-moist food; one meal is ready when you fill it and you schedule the other four, per the listing. It’s the simple pick if you don’t want an app or a power cord.

Reviewed tested it and liked that it doesn’t rely on electricity. It runs on 4 D batteries, has a feed-now button and a suspend option that keeps your schedule, and the tray goes in the top rack of the dishwasher. PetSafe says it’s best for cats and small to medium dogs. It had about 11,300 ratings (4.4 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: it holds only five meals of up to a cup each, so you refill it often, and the tray isn’t refrigerated.

Who this is NOT for: large dogs, or owners who want an app.

6. Dokoo 15L Automatic Dog Feeder: best for large breeds

Bottom line: a 15L (about 63-cup) feeder built for large dogs, with a wide outlet for dry kibble from 2 to 22 mm, up to 6 meals a day, 1–20 portions per meal and an adjustable raised bowl, per the listing. Consider it for its listed hopper capacity and kibble range, and verify the portion output.

Dokoo says the hopper reseals after every meal to limit air exposure, and you can record a 10-second voice call. You program it on the device, with no app. It had about 310 ratings (4.5 stars) at our check, sold by Dokoo Direct-US.

Limitation: it has far fewer ratings than the other picks, we couldn’t find an independent test, and its sealing and kibble-size claims come from the maker.

Who this is NOT for: owners who want app control, or who want a model with independent testing.

How to choose an automatic dog feeder

How much does your dog eat per meal?

Check your dog’s daily amount and split it into meals. The PETLIBRO Granary and PetSafe Simply Feed both list up to 4 cups per meal; for a large dog, also check hopper size, such as the Dokoo’s 15L, and confirm the actual output with your kibble.

Will your kibble fit?

Most feeders list a kibble size range, often up to 15 mm. Large, flat or mixed-shape pieces jam more easily. Tom’s Guide found one PetSafe feeder couldn’t handle a food with mixed nugget sizes, so test your food before relying on it.

WiFi, camera or neither?

App feeders let you change meals from your phone, and many add low-food or jam alerts, though this varies by model; a camera lets you watch the bowl. If you don’t need either, a battery feeder like the PetSafe 5-Meal is simpler and works during power cuts.

What happens in a power cut?

Look for battery backup. Offline operation varies by model; the PETLIBRO Granary, for example, keeps its schedule on batteries but drops WiFi, so verify power and connectivity requirements.

For fresh water alongside the feeder, see our best dog water fountain guide; for a dedicated camera, our best pet camera; and for cats, our best automatic cat feeder picks.

Buying tip: before you buy, measure your dog’s kibble, check the feeder’s listed size range, and check the current price on the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Are automatic dog feeders good for dogs?

They can help keep regular mealtimes and measured portions. The ASPCA recommends two meals a day, eight to twelve hours apart, and a timed feeder makes that easy, but someone should still check on your dog every day.

Can I leave my dog alone for a weekend with an automatic feeder?

The AKC advises against relying on a feeder alone if you’ll be away for more than a day: food can spoil, feeders can malfunction and health problems can go unnoticed. Arrange a pet sitter or someone to check in.

What is the best automatic feeder for large dogs?

Look for large meal portions and a wide kibble range. The PETLIBRO Granary and PetSafe Simply Feed list up to 4 cups per meal, and the Dokoo 15L lists kibble up to 22 mm, but check your dog’s daily amount and kibble size first.

Can automatic dog feeders handle wet food?

The feeders in this list are designed for dry food; the PetSafe 5-Meal also takes semi-moist food. Wet food left out can spoil, so ask your vet before using a feeder for it.

Do automatic dog feeders work without WiFi?

Yes. The PetSafe Simply Feed, PetSafe 5-Meal and Dokoo are programmed on the unit. Offline operation varies by WiFi model; the PETLIBRO Granary keeps its stored schedule on battery backup, but app control stops.

Our verdict

For most small and medium dogs, the PETLIBRO Granary WiFi is the best automatic dog feeder, with app scheduling and alerts. If you would rather skip the app, the PetSafe Simply Feed holds 24 cups and is programmed on the unit. Add the PETLIBRO with Camera if you want to watch meals, and look at the Dokoo 15L for large breeds with big kibble.
