The best vacuum for pet hair pulls fur out of carpet without wrapping it around the brushroll, holds enough in the bin to finish a room, and, if anyone in your home has allergies, keeps dust and dander inside the machine. The right type depends on your home: a corded upright for lots of carpet, a cordless stick for quick daily passes, a handheld for sofas and the car, or a robot to keep up between cleans. We compared seven vacuums from Bissell, Shark, Dyson, Levoit, BLACK+DECKER and roborock by hair pickup in independent tests, brushroll tangling, filtration, bin size and runtime.
Last updated: October 2026.

How we evaluated these vacuums
We didn’t run seven vacuums side by side in our own homes for this article. We read each Amazon listing and maker information, checked stock, seller and rating counts on Amazon (US, ZIP 10001) on October 25, 2026 (these can change), and weighed the independent tests we could find from RTINGS, Vacuum Wars and Tech Advisor, which measure things like hair pickup, hair wrap on the brushroll and noise. Where a test covered a close variant rather than the exact listing, we say so.
We left out two Shark models whose product cards showed no name or image, a Dyson V15 Detect listing without a working add-to-cart option, a robot sold only by a third-party seller with low stock, and a Shark cordless stick that RTINGS scored poorly for air quality.
Pet hair, dander and allergies: what a vacuum can do
Short answer: a good vacuum lowers the hair and dander in your home, but it won’t remove pet allergens on its own.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America explains that pet allergens are proteins found in skin flakes (dander), saliva and urine, and that hair can carry them around your home. It recommends a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and its indoor allergen guide suggests vacuuming once or twice a week.
Less hair on the floor starts with the pet. The American Kennel Club recommends regular brushing suited to your dog’s coat to manage shedding.
Pro Tip: if your dog is scared of the vacuum, start with it unplugged, then run it in another room while you reward calm behavior, and move closer only as they stay relaxed. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center describes this kind of gradual, reward-based approach for fearful dogs.
1. BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off (39883): best vacuum for pet hair overall
Bottom line: a corded upright with a tangle-free brushroll, a HEPA sealed allergen system and a lift-off pod for stairs and furniture, per the listing. It’s the best all-round choice for homes with carpet, shedding pets and allergies.

In Vacuum Wars’ test, it removed all the embedded sand in their deep-clean test, didn’t wrap with 7-inch hair and left only a little residue with 14-inch hair, and it passed their fog-leak filtration test (a leak check, not proof of allergy relief). It comes with a TurboEraser pet tool and a 2-in-1 dusting brush and crevice tool. It had about 3,400 ratings (4.4 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.
Limitation: it’s heavy (Vacuum Wars reports 14.4 lb; Amazon lists 15.7 lb), Vacuum Wars found the pod release awkward, and how often you empty the 1 L tank depends on how much your pets shed.
Who this is NOT for: anyone who wants to go cordless, or who has mostly hard floors and small rooms.
2. Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet (2252): best budget upright
Bottom line: a corded upright with a triple-action brushroll for embedded pet hair, scatter-free hard-floor cleaning, swivel steering and pet tools for upholstery, per the listing. It’s the value pick if you want strong pickup without paying for HEPA.

Vacuum Wars found strong pickup and full embedded-sand removal in their test. It had about 83,400 ratings (4.5 stars) at our check, the most of any pick here, and was sold by Amazon.
Limitation: it doesn’t have a HEPA filter or a sealed system, so it isn’t our pick for allergy sufferers.
Who this is NOT for: homes where someone has pet allergies or asthma.
3. Shark Navigator Lift-Away (NV360): best lift-away upright
Bottom line: a corded upright with a HEPA filter and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, a lift-away pod for stairs and furniture, brushroll shutoff for hard floors and a 0.9-quart dust cup, per the listing. Pick it if you want a lift-away design with HEPA filtration.

RTINGS found good pickup of pet hair on carpet in its test, though embedded strands needed extra passes. It had about 55,400 ratings (4.3 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.
Limitation: its brushroll lacks anti-tangle features and isn’t removable, which makes clearing wrapped hair awkward, per RTINGS.
Who this is NOT for: homes with long-haired pets, if you don’t want to clear the brushroll often.
4. Dyson V11 Origin: best cordless vacuum for pet hair
Bottom line: a cordless stick that converts to a handheld, with a Motorbar cleaner head designed to de-tangle long and pet hair, a hair screw tool for pet beds and car seats, an LCD runtime screen and up to 60 minutes of runtime in Eco mode, per the listing. It’s the pick if you want cordless convenience and tools built for pet hair.
- Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum, Wand, Docking Station, Charger, Mini Soft Dusting Brush, Crevice Tool, Hair Screw Tool, Motor…
- Versatile and cordless for whole-home deep cleaning.
- 60% more power.¹ Up to 60 minutes of run time.²
RTINGS tested the V11 Animal with a Torque Drive head and scored it 8.8 out of 10 for pet hair, measuring about 70 to 71 dBA; that isn’t a test of this Motorbar-equipped Origin, so treat it as a guide to the V11 family. Dyson says its whole-machine filtration traps 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. It had about 4,000 ratings (4.3 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.
Limitation: runtime drops well below 60 minutes in Boost mode, and it costs more than the corded picks here.
Who this is NOT for: large, carpet-heavy homes where a corded upright is easier on the budget.
5. Levoit Cordless Vacuum: best budget cordless for hard floors
Bottom line: a light cordless stick with an anti-tangle brush, a 2-in-1 pet tool, LED lights and a 0.75 L dustbin, and it lies flat to reach under furniture, per the listing. Levoit lists up to 50 minutes in Eco with the crevice or pet tool, 30 minutes with the floor head and 12 minutes in Turbo.

Amazon identifies this listing as the LVAC-200 Essential. Tech Advisor tested an LVAC-200 (its review lists a smaller bin than this listing, so specs may differ by version) and found excellent pickup of fur on hard floors and easy detangling, but repeated passes still left embedded fur in carpet. It had about 14,600 ratings (4.2 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.
Limitation: it’s best on hard floors and low rugs; for deep carpet, an upright does more.
Who this is NOT for: carpet-heavy homes with heavy shedders.
6. BLACK+DECKER dustbuster furbuster: best handheld pet hair vacuum
Bottom line: a 20V MAX cordless handheld with a motorized pet brush with rubber bristles, a PowerBoost mode, an extendable crevice tool, a washable pre-filter and filter and a 2-year limited warranty, per the listing. It’s the pick for sofas, pet beds, stairs and the car.
- #1 brand in hand vacs**
- Optimal performance – 20V MAX* lithium-ion battery provides high suction power and performance for a hand vacuum
- POWERBOOST mode – more power with a touch of a button, making it an ideal pet vacuum for pet hair
RTINGS found good hair pickup in its review of the dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Pet, which links to this listing, with about 30 minutes of runtime at minimum power and about 13 minutes at maximum; runtime varies with use. It had about 13,800 ratings (4.1 stars) at our check and was sold by Amazon.
Limitation: RTINGS found the build plasticky, and the filters need regular cleaning to keep suction up.
Who this is NOT for: anyone looking for a floor vacuum; this is a spot cleaner.
7. roborock Q7 M5+: best budget robot vacuum for pet hair
Bottom line: a robot vacuum and mop with LiDAR mapping, an anti-tangle main brush and a self-emptying dock with a 2.7 L sealed bag that roborock says lasts up to 7 to 9 weeks, per the listing. Pick it to keep hair under control between deeper cleans.

In Vacuum Wars’ test, it picked up 79% of flattened hair, and 43% of long hair wrapped in their tangle test. It had about 25,500 ratings (4.0 stars) at our check, shipped by Amazon and sold by Roborock.
Limitation: Vacuum Wars found it doesn’t avoid small obstacles, so pick up cords and socks and check for pet accidents before each run. The mop doesn’t lift, so remove the mop pad before cleaning carpet.
Who this is NOT for: homes with puppies or pets that sometimes have accidents indoors, or owners who want a robot to replace a full vacuum.
How to choose a vacuum for pet hair
Carpet or hard floors?
For lots of carpet and heavy shedding, a corded upright like the BISSELL 39883 or Bissell 2252 gives steady suction with no battery limit. For mostly hard floors, a cordless stick like the Levoit is lighter and quicker to grab.
Does it resist hair wrap?
Long hair wraps around standard brushrolls. Look for an anti-tangle or de-tangling brush, and check independent tangle tests: the BISSELL 39883 didn’t wrap with 7-inch hair in Vacuum Wars’ test, while the roborock Q7 M5+ still wrapped 43% of long hair.
Do you need HEPA?
If anyone has pet allergies or asthma, the AAFA recommends a HEPA vacuum. The BISSELL 39883 and Shark NV360 list HEPA filters with sealed systems; the Bissell 2252 doesn’t.
Cordless, handheld or robot?
A cordless stick suits quick daily passes, a handheld covers furniture and the car, and a robot keeps up with hair between cleans. Many pet homes use one main vacuum plus a handheld or robot.
For coat grooming, see our best dog clippers guide; for less litter tracked across the floor, our best self-cleaning litter box picks.
Buying tip: check the current price on the listing, and look at what tools are included, since pet tools and cleaner heads vary between versions of the same vacuum.
Frequently asked questions
What type of vacuum is best for pet hair?
For most homes with carpet and shedding pets, a corded upright with an anti-tangle brushroll and a pet tool is the strongest all-round choice. A cordless stick or handheld helps with quick cleanups, and a robot can keep up between full cleans.
Does a HEPA vacuum help with pet allergies?
The AAFA recommends a HEPA vacuum for pet allergies, because pet allergens come from dander, saliva and urine, and hair can carry them. A vacuum helps, but it won’t remove all allergens on its own.
How often should I vacuum if I have pets?
The AAFA suggests vacuuming once or twice a week to control indoor allergens. Homes with heavy shedders may need more frequent passes on high-traffic areas.
Are robot vacuums good for pet hair?
They help keep hair from building up, but most don’t replace a full vacuum. Check tangle tests and obstacle avoidance: in Vacuum Wars’ test, the roborock Q7 M5+ wrapped 43% of long hair and didn’t avoid small obstacles.
How do I stop my dog from being scared of the vacuum?
Introduce it slowly: start with it unplugged, then run it in another room while you reward calm behavior, moving closer only as your dog stays relaxed. Ask your vet or a qualified trainer if the fear is severe.
Our verdict
For most homes with shedding pets, the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off (39883) is the best vacuum for pet hair, with a tangle-free brushroll and HEPA sealed system. Choose the Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet to save money if allergies aren’t a concern, the Dyson V11 Origin to go cordless, and add the BLACK+DECKER furbuster for furniture and the car.
