The best dog clippers for home grooming are relatively quiet, suited to your dog’s coat, and come with guide combs that help control the cutting length. For most owners that means a cordless kit with several combs; for thick coats, a clipper with a detachable steel blade made for heavier coats. We compared six dog clippers and trimmers, from oneisall home kits to Wahl and Andis professional clippers and a small paw trimmer.

How we evaluated these dog clippers

We didn’t groom a line of dogs for this article. We read each Amazon listing, checked stock, seller and rating counts on Amazon (US, ZIP 10001) in October 2026, compared what each maker lists for blades, combs, power and runtime, and checked our shortlist against independent product reviews. The grooming safety advice comes from the AKC and ASPCA.

We left out a popular budget clipper we couldn’t find independent testing for, a professional clipper whose delivery date was more than two weeks out, a new brushless clipper with a single rating, and three Wahl listings whose product cards showed no name or image.

Should you clip your dog at home?

Short answer: whether home clipping suits your dog depends on its coat, skin and how well it tolerates handling. Many owners tidy paws and sanitary areas themselves; for mats, a double coat or a full haircut, ask a groomer first.

The ASPCA says early, mild mats can be brushed out, but mats that have progressed need clipping, and a mat you can’t easily brush out is a reason to see a groomer or vet. It also warns never to cut mats out with scissors, since a dog can jerk and be cut.

The AKC says grooming experts generally advise against shaving double-coated dogs, because the undercoat insulates them and shaving can leave them more vulnerable to overheating, sunburn and skin problems. The ASPCA likewise advises never to shave down to the skin.

What makes good dog clippers?

Short answer: a blade and motor matched to your dog’s coat, guide combs for an even length, low noise for nervous dogs, and a blade you can remove and clean.

  • Blade: detachable steel blades suit thick coats; the oneisall LED model lists ceramic blades. On blade sets like the Bravura’s, a higher blade number generally means a shorter cut, so check the maker’s length chart.
  • Guide combs: clip-on combs help keep an even length, but they don’t remove all risk of nicks. Start with a long comb.
  • Power: cordless is easier to move around; corded clippers don’t run out mid-groom.
  • Noise: the oneisall listings claim under 50–55 dB, but treat maker figures as approximate: one independent test measured the oneisall Low Noise at about 61.5 dB. Dogs’ reactions vary.

Pro Tip: clipper blades heat up with use and a hot blade can burn skin. Check the blade’s temperature often, and if it feels hot, stop and let it cool or swap it.

1. oneisall Low Noise Dog Clippers: best for beginners

Bottom line: a rechargeable home kit that the maker says runs below 50 dB, with 6 guide combs (3–18 mm), a curved blade and a charger that lets you keep clipping while it charges, per the listing. It’s the easy starting point for light trims.

The cutter head comes off in a second for rinsing, per the listing, and the maker suggests a first trim with the included scissors on long, thick hair. It had about 98,400 ratings at our check, the most in this list, sold by the brand (ONEISALL Direct).

Limitation: the maker suggests trimming long, thick hair with scissors first, and mats you can’t brush out are a job for a groomer.

Who this is NOT for: thick double coats or full-body clips on large dogs.

2. oneisall Dog Clippers for Thick Heavy Coats: best for thick coats

Bottom line: a cordless clipper marketed for thick coats, with a detachable stainless steel blade, eight comb lengths listed from 3 to 25 mm and a 2,000 mAh battery rated for about 240 minutes, per the listing. The maker lists it for medium, curly double and short coats; see the AKC note above before clipping a double coat.

The listing says it runs below 55 dB, charges in about 2 hours by USB-C or USB, is IPX7 waterproof for rinsing, and has a lock so it doesn’t switch on in a bag. It had about 24,200 ratings at our check, sold by the brand.

Limitation: a full-size clipper is harder to steer around small areas like paws and face.

Who this is NOT for: detail work on toy breeds, where a paw trimmer is easier.

3. oneisall Dog Grooming Clippers with LED Display: best battery display

Bottom line: a cordless clipper with ceramic blades, 6 length settings (3–18 mm) and an LCD battery display, rated for 3–4 hours on a 3-hour charge, per the listing. Pick it if you groom in long sessions and want to see the charge.

The blade is detachable and waterproof for rinsing, and the kit includes 6 guide guards, a cleaning brush, a comb and scissors, per the listing. It had about 12,900 ratings at our check, sold by the brand.

Limitation: it lists ceramic blades rather than a detachable steel blade, and the longest comb is 18 mm.

Who this is NOT for: owners who want a detachable steel blade; matted coats need a groomer’s assessment.

4. Wahl Professional Animal Bravura: best professional cordless clipper

Bottom line: a lithium-ion professional clipper with an adjustable 5-in-1 fine blade (#9, #10, #15, #30 and #40), 90 minutes of cordless use and a 60-minute recharge, or you can plug in the cord, per the listing. Wahl positions it for feet, face and finish work on all breeds and light body clipping on small and medium dogs.

The kit includes 6 plastic guide combs, a cleaning brush, blade oil, a charging stand and a soft case, per the listing. It had about 1,900 ratings at our check, sold by a third-party seller (Pattern).

Limitation: it’s in the premium tier, and Wahl lists only light body clipping on small and medium dogs, so it isn’t a full-body clipper for big, thick coats.

Who this is NOT for: full clips on large, heavy-coated dogs, or a tight budget.

5. Andis UltraEdge 2-Speed (24675): best professional corded clipper

Bottom line: a corded, two-speed rotary-motor clipper with a detachable blade and a 14-foot cord, per the listing. It’s the pick for full-body clipping when you don’t want a battery to run out.

The detachable blade comes off for cleaning and changing, per the listing. It had about 1,300 ratings at our check and was sold by Amazon.

Limitation: the cord limits movement and needs a nearby outlet, and it’s in the premium tier.

Who this is NOT for: occasional paw and face tidying, where a small cordless trimmer is easier.

6. oneisall Dog Paw Trimmer: best for paws and face

Bottom line: a small rechargeable trimmer with a small and a medium blade that the maker lists for paw hair, ears and eyes. It’s a detail tool to use alongside a full-size clipper; ask a groomer before trimming near the eyes.

It charges by USB in about 2 hours for about 2 hours of use, and comes with a cleaning brush, per the listing. It had about 19,400 ratings at our check, sold by the brand.

Limitation: its small blade is too narrow for body clipping.

Who this is NOT for: owners who want one tool for the whole body.

How to choose dog clippers

What coat does your dog have?

For short or fine coats and light trims, the oneisall Low Noise kit is enough. For thick, curly or heavy coats, choose the oneisall Thick Heavy Coats model or the corded Andis. Remember the AKC’s advice against shaving double coats.

How much will you clip?

For paws, face and sanitary trims, a paw trimmer or the Bravura works well. For a full-body clip, choose a clipper with a long runtime or a cord.

Is your dog nervous?

Start with short sessions and a clipper your dog tolerates, introduced gradually. If your dog has mats you can’t brush out, the ASPCA advises seeing a groomer or vet rather than cutting them yourself.

Holiday tip: US Bing searches for “dog clippers” ran at about 830–1,350 a month over the past year, with “dog grooming clippers” adding another 700–1,130. If a clipper is a gift, check the coat type it’s made for, the combs included and the current price on the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use human hair clippers on my dog?

It’s better to use clippers made for pets. Pet clippers are designed for animal coats and usually come with pet guide combs; check the listing for your dog’s coat type.

Should I shave my double-coated dog?

The AKC says grooming experts generally advise against it, because the undercoat insulates the dog and shaving can raise the risk of overheating, sunburn and skin problems. The ASPCA advises never shaving down to the skin.

How do I keep clipper blades from burning my dog?

Check the blade temperature often, and stop to let it cool or switch blades if it feels hot, since a hot blade can burn skin.

What do clipper blade numbers mean?

On professional blade sets, a higher number generally leaves shorter hair. Check the maker’s chart for the exact length each blade leaves.

What should I do about mats?

The ASPCA says mild mats can be brushed out, but progressed mats need clipping, and you should see a groomer or vet for mats you can’t easily brush out. Never cut mats out with scissors.

Our verdict

For most home groomers, the oneisall Low Noise kit is the dog clipper we’d start with. Choose the oneisall Thick Heavy Coats model for dense coats, the Wahl Bravura for professional-grade finishing, and the corded Andis UltraEdge for full-body clips. Add the oneisall Paw Trimmer for paws and face.
